Case Study: Northman Movie Motion Graphics Title Sequence

CASE STUDY: Title Sequence Motion Graphics
The challenge here was to recreate an exciting new title sequence short for the 2022 movie “the Northman”.
Image Generation
A series of movie stills were collected and modified to make them less realistic and more as they looked carved out of wood. The Nordic myth of Fenray the Wolf is prominent in the story and was chosen as a main focal point. Fenrya in myth is the wolf that is to end the world, symbolic of the main character and his arc. In this trailer, rather than using video or transitions from the movie, I chose stills and graphics associated with Norse themes. These stills were used in Adobe After Effects to create a fun and dynamic new movie title sequence to promote the movie.

Northman-Motion Graphics -Images-Movie Title Sequence
Screen grabs from the movie were used and modified for character reference. The “Wolf Prince” and his mother as well as the witch foretell the story. The flames were used to reference the “volcanic” drama of the movie which is both figurative and literal as we see in the movie. The idea of fire and passion that drives anger and lust are central themes.

Elements of the Wolf/Sword. Separated from the base image, a sword was created to create the merger of the wolf face. The wolf features prominently as that is the icon of the protagonist as well as the sword which is carried for vengeance. The merger of the sword and the wolf completes the story arc which we see in the film.
